FAQ'S
How it all began and EP107 was discovered
A Hungarian discovery to fight anxiety. An interview with Professor Prof. Dr. József Haller, neurobiologist and one of the inventors of EP107TM Echinacea extract, the main ingredient of cannanxtablets
This is the story of two internationally renowned Hungarian scientists and the discovery of a special active ingredient in a plant. Prof. Dr. József Haller and Prof. Dr. Tamás Freund, found an active ingredient in the narrow-leaved coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) that can be used to treat anxiety. This is a significant scientific advance, as echinacea is traditionally used to treat colds or support the immune system. Only a few Echinacea species grown in selected areas have the necessary anti-anxiety ingredients. The product made from the extract is already a success in the United States and is now being introduced in Hungary, with other European countries to follow. We may well witness the global success of another Hungarian discovery.

Every discovery has a story. How did the special capabilities of EP107 come to light?
It may come as a surprise that the discovery of the active ingredient and later the development of the product is due to a coincidence. Together with academic Prof. Tamás Freund, we won an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Union to study anxiety, including the function of cannabionoids (compounds in our body that may play a role in stress response, memory storage, social behavior, anxiety relief, etc. by regulating chemical signaling between nerve cells - author's note). We were the first to demonstrate the anxiety-related effects of the so-called CB1 cannabinoid receptors, which are mainly located in our nervous system. Our work on this topic was subsequently cited in hundreds of studies abroad. During this research, I happened to read an article about Echinacea, which contains substances similar to the body's own cannabinoids. We investigated whether echinacea could be used as a complementary therapy and hypothesized that it might support the effects of other anti-anxiety medications. When the trials began, we observed a strong antianxiety effect in the laboratory experiments, so we began systematic research into whether echinacea could be developed as a stand-alone therapy for anxiety.
You'd think we'd be familiar with echinacea, although we know it mainly as a natural remedy for cold symptoms. So far, so good. What have we found out about echinacea for anxiety?
The substances contained in echinacea or echinacea are fast-acting anti-anxiety substances similar to benzodiazepines (prescription drugs prescribed by a specialist to reduce anxiety, relieve tension and calm fears - editor's note), but without their very strong side effects, such as drowsiness and poor motor coordination. They have the advantage over other anti-anxiety medications in that they work more quickly. It is important to note that echinacea extract is not used to treat anxiety disorders, but mild anxiety. These may be fear of flying or dentists, fear of exams, or recurrent anxiety that does not require a medical diagnosis. It can be used to treat anxiety when needed, such as when life takes you over a long period of time or when you have something that scares you. In this case, the person (I don't want to say the patient) starts taking the drug (or supplement) and can stop taking it within a short period of time. When this happens again, she can take it again. It is not a classic anti-anxiety therapy, where anti-anxiety pills are taken under medical supervision for 1-2 years and the effect starts at the earliest after a month or a month and a half. In the case of this unique echinacea extract, the therapy can be safely discontinued after up to 1-2 weeks; once the symptoms have stopped, the effect lasts for some time.
So if you have Echinacea at home - either the plant or an extract from it - can it work?
No, it is not that simple. After the first experiments, we bought various extracts of echinacea from different suppliers, and we were shocked ourselves because none of them had an anti-anxiety effect. And you don't want to discover something that only applies on Thursday and no other day of the week. So we looked for more and more providers. We looked at a total of about fifteen extracts from different vendors until we found one more that had the anxiety-relieving effect. We found that only a very small group of Echinacea extracts contained the right profile of alkamides that could reduce anxiety. We named the extract containing the required amount of such compounds EP107. This name does not stand for a specific substance, but for a specific profile of alkamide compounds that can be used to alleviate anxiety.
How does a research, a discovery become a product?
It is very rare that basic research leads to practical applications in the hands of the discoverers. Of course, the goal of basic research is always practical application, but this goal is usually far away. It usually takes decades and requires the work of several independent research teams to achieve practical application. In our case, about ten years passed between the start of the research and the launch of the product in the U.S., and I am particularly proud that the same people who did the basic research were also involved in the practical research work. During those ten years, we explored the unique effects of echinacea, initiated molecular, electrophysiological and behavioral pharmacological studies, and began product development in collaboration with internationally renowned pharmaceutical companies. In the course of our research, we detailed the mechanism of action and properties, and closely studied the side effects (which we did not find). After the laboratory phase, we began human trials, and we have now been in the U.S. market for ten years, with successful product launches and returning customers. We are now starting to launch in Europe, initially in Hungary, with plans to enter other European countries in the coming years.
Finally, I would like to ask you a classic "cobbler's question": Do you use EP107 Echinacea extract?
Yes, I use it myself from time to time. My work and commitments are quite demanding. It's not anxiety specifically. I would rather say that there are moments when I feel like I'm running out of energy, that somehow I don't have the will or the strength to keep going. I feel like life is putting pressure on my shoulders. Echinacea gives me a sense of calm and confidence. It improves my quality of life, negative thoughts turn into positive thoughts, and the negative feelings of being overwhelmed are gone. Similar results were independently reported by an Australian research team that recently published their research on our product. They found that Echinacea can improve quality of life and even reduce the risk of depression. This, along with the anxiety-relieving effect we have demonstrated, makes the product very attractive.
