Cannabidiol or CBD for short is a plant substance from cannabis that is used in cosmetics, food and medicine and has no psychotropic properties. Cannabis is one of the oldest useful plants and has accompanied mankind for many thousands of years.
CBD cannabis is increasingly becoming the focus of research, medicine and the media. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the following properties have been scientifically investigated:
- Analgesic

This limit is determined by the legislator. THC is listed as a psychotropic substance, but may be contained within Austria up to 0.3% in commercial hemp. An abuse as an addictive substance can therefore be excluded. Since in other EU member states the limit is still 0.2%, our products contain less than 0.2% THC.
At cannhelpwe take product safety very seriously. Therefore, we have our raw materials, but also our products, regularly tested by certified laboratories and also publish the results of these analyses and laboratory results in the Quality and Quality Assurance section on our homepage.
Our products are manufactured in Austria. The ingredients are exclusively carefully selected and analysed raw materials. Most of our products also contain terpenes, better known as essential oils, which give our products their special aroma.
Since 2018, all cannabinoids are subject to approval as ingredients in food due to the Novel Food Regulation. Approval at EU level is the prerequisite for marketing as food or food supplements. Until successful approval, our products remain declared as aroma products in order to comply with the current legal situation. The "Novel Food Regulation" states that foods which have not been consumed to a significant extent before 15 May 1997 are first subject to a safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority ( EFSA ) and require approval.
As part of the EIHA Novel Food Consortium, we are working on the approval as a novel food and as an active member we advocate for legal certainty and clarity at the European level.

Products to which CBD has been added are currently not yet approved for ingestion, as approval at EU level is a prerequisite for marketing. The reason for this is the so-called "Novel Food Regulation", which states that foods that were not consumed to a significant extent before 15 May 1997 are first subject to a safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority ( EFSA ) and require approval. This does not apply to foods that already contain a natural level of CBD, such as hemp seed oil, hemp tea or hemp protein powder.

The recent decisions of the United Nations (UN) to remove cannabis from List IV of the 1961 Convention and to no longer classify it as a dangerous drug in the future is based, among other things, on the recommendation of the World Health Organisation (WHO), and is intended to contribute to the recognition of the medicinal value of cannabis. In parallel, the EU Commission has already confirmed in writing to the EIHA (European Industrial Hemp Association) in December 2020 that CBD can be classified as a possible food and not as a narcotic. The European Commission is resuming the examination of applications for authorisation of CBD products and continuing that for applications already submitted. Daniel Kruse, President of the European Industrial Hemp Association, called the development groundbreaking for this industry and was pleased with the decision not to consider CBD as a drug but to qualify it as a food.

It is a pleasure for cannhelp, together with other European industry leaders, to take this issue forward at this level as an active member of the EIHA Novel Food Consortium. Again, we are fully transparent and in constant exchange with the authorities to further improve access to CBD oil and hemp products in the EU.
A medicinal effect may only be attributed to approved medicinal products, as the effect and safety have been verified by studies. Already approved medicines with CBD are used for epilepsy and multiple sclerosis because CBD has anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects. However, this does not mean that all products with CBD have these effects and alleviate diseases.
Some manufacturers of food supplements with CBD advertise medical effects such as pain relief, a reduction in anxiety or a general improvement in health, although their products have not been approved for this purpose. In doing so, they refer to current research results with CBD, which point to a variety of possible medical applications of CBD. In doing so, these market players not only accept potentially high penalties, but also capitalise on the fear and hope of consumers.
cannhelpdoes not advertise any medicinal effect and does not give any recommendation regarding dosage and intake, as the products are aromatic oils.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) consists of two primary receptors - CB1 and CB2 - as well as a variety of lesser known receptors such as the GPR18, GPR55 and GPR119 receptors and enzymes such as FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase). CB1 and CB2 receptors are found throughout the body, CB1 receptors are mostly found on neurons where they regulate neuronal activity and CB2 receptors are predominantly found on immune cells. See our blog post on the endocannabinoid system for more in-depth information.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex physiological system, was first described in 1992 by a research team from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH, Bethesda, Maryland/USA) led by William Devane and Dr. Lumir Hanus in collaboration with the Israeli scientist Raphael Mechoulam. The ECS is an endogenous regulatory system of the nervous and immune system that can significantly influence the functions of memory, appetite, metabolism, temperature regulation, stress behaviour, immune response, pain perception and motivation. This happens through the production of endocannabinoids, such as anandamide and 2-AG, which can then bind to the receptors to have a regulating effect. CBD, along with other plant substances, can also bind to these receptors and is therefore also called a phyto-cannabinoid.
